About the Artwork

Georgia O’Keeffe. Series I - From the Plains, 1919. Oil on canvas, 27 7/16 x 23 1/2 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe), Gift of The Burnett Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2007.1.13]
Vertical canvas with cloudy blue, green, and cream colored formation filling the bottom half of the painting. Hovering over this in a black background is a foggy streak of red. The upper half of the canvas is traversed by a lightning bolt zig-zag shape in greenish white that cuts through the blue-black of the background.

O'Keeffe was inspired to paint this work by the high plains landscape of west Texas, where she lived from 1912 to 1914 while an art instructor there. As she recalled: “Amarillo, Texas, was the cattle-shipping center for a large area of the Southwest. For days we would see large herds of cattle with their clouds of dust being driven slowly across the plains toward the town. . . . The cattle in the pens lowing for their calves day and night was a sound that has always haunted me. It had a regular rhythmic beat. . . . It was loud and raw under the stars in that wide empty country.” This painting was completed in New York, however, months after O’Keeffe had left Texas permanently.
