About the Artwork

Georgia O'Keeffe. Inside the Tent While at U. of Virginia, 1916. Oil on canvas, 18 1/4 x 23 5/8 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Gift of The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2006.5.39]

During her first summer at the University of Virginia, O’Keeffe took a course taught by visiting artist Alon Bement, which focused on the theories of artist Arthur Wesley Dow. Dow believed that art should not be an imitation of nature but a harmony of lines, colors, and dark and light patterns. The folded fabric forms in this work pays tribute to her eye-opening training, where she developed a personal vocabulary of abstract forms and composition.
