Georgia O'Keeffe. Old Tree, 1918. Watercolor on paper, 12 x 18 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Gift of The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2006.5.84]
Red tree trunk strong central branch forms a diagonal curved shape, leaves are predominantly green and yellow.
The summer of 1918 marked O’Keeffe’s first trip with Alfred Stieglitz to his family’s summer home in Lake George, New York. The verdant landscape was brimming with trees and other natural inspiration for the painter. This maple, somewhat abstracted here through O’Keeffe’s flowing purple and orange watercolors, was a central feature of the Stieglitz’s front lawn. Both O’Keeffe and Stieglitz returned to this tree many times over the years in their work.
