About the Artwork

Georgia O'Keeffe. Stump in Red Hills, 1940. Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Gift of The Stéphane Janssen Trust in memory of R. Michael Johns. © Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. [1996.7.2]
Vertical canvas of vibrant red and orange hills dominated in the foreground by a twisting frayed brown tree stump - a piece of driftwood in a sea of reddish orange.

Georgia O’Keeffe created this painting the same year that she bought the Ghost Ranch house—her first permanent home in New Mexico. For the rest of her life, Ghost Ranch and its surrounding arid landscape served as inspiration for her work. Here, O’Keeffe has lifted a dramatically contoured piece of old juniper out of the landscape in both the painting, where is hovers above the flame-hued hills of the background, and in real life. O’Keeffe found this piece of tree so visually compelling that she brought it home as a reminder of both form and place.
