Georgia O'Keeffe. Abstraction, Seaweed and Water - Maine, 1920. Pastel on paper, 28 3/8 x 17 3/4 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Gift of The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2006.5.88]
Abstract oval shape with a blue middle surrounded by green, yellow, and red layers.
Trained as a watercolorist, O’Keeffe first employed pastel in her works on paper in the 1920s, after her move to New York in 1918. This pastel attests to O’Keeffe’s early experiments with the medium, and to her movement between abstraction and representation. Abstraction, Seaweed and Water was inspired by a painting trip to York, Maine, a seaside destination that O’Keeffe returned to repeatedly in the 1920s.
