About the Artwork

Georgia O'Keeffe. The Barns, Lake George, 1926. Oil on canvas, 21 x 32 1/4 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe), Museum Purchase. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2016.3.1]

O’Keeffe was drawn to the simple yet refined forms of rural barns, painting them in various locations throughout her life. Having been raised on a farm in Wisconsin, O’Keeffe saw the buildings as connections to the land and nature. At Lake George, O’Keeffe found creative refuge in the small barn portrayed here, which she called her “shanty.” The shanty provided a quiet, solitary space for O’Keeffe to paint, away from the often-boisterous house filled with the Stieglitz family and friends. This particular painting, with its solid gray mass before a gray sky, is a study of shapes and form, but also an expression of the somber mood that O’Keeffe often felt at Lake George.
