Georgia O'Keeffe. Red Maple, 1922. Oil on canvas, 25 x 20 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe), Gift of The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2006.5.96]
A large, red maple tree swirls through much of the left and central portions of this work. To the right, a dark cone-shaped tree ascends along the painting's border, while yellow trees are visible in the background. The uppermost portion of the background is colored in shades of gray.
In the spring of 1918, O’Keeffe accepted Alfred Stieglitz’s invitation to move from Canyon, west Texas, to live with him in New York City. For the next 16 years she would take part in the Stieglitz family tradition of vacationing at Lake George, in the Adirondack region of northeastern New York. Their summer home provided O’Keeffe with a wide range of inspiration for her paintings, including flowers—the subject with which she would find fame. But Lake George offered other subjects beyond the gardens. In contrast to the arid plains and canyons of Texas, the forests surrounding the lake formed a dense and colorful backdrop, especially in fall when the foliage of the maples turned to flaming reds and yellows.
