About the Artwork

Georgia O'Keeffe. Blue Black and Grey, 1960. Oil on canvas, 40 x 30 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Gift of The Burnett Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2007.1.29]
Large vertical canvas with a dominant blue form that flows from the upper left to the middle of the bottom in a ground of white and grey. Branching off from the thick blue shape is a thin blue line that makes a V through the white on the right side of the canvas.

In the 1960s, O’Keeffe created a series of paintings inspired by aerial views of clouds, roads, and rivers. Though O’Keeffe acknowledged that this particular painting represented a river, she appreciated the ambiguity of the subject when the picture was first displayed in New York: “One day I saw a man looking around. . . . I heard him remark, ‘They must be rivers seen from the air.’ I was pleased that someone had seen what I saw.” While the sight of a river from the sky may have inspired this composition, it features shapes (such as the V in the upper-right) that O’Keeffe had been repeating in her paintings for decades.
