About the Artwork

Georgia O'Keeffe. Mountain Flowers No. II / Mariposa Lily – Pink, 1940. Oil on canvas, 14 x 10 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Gift of The Mary P. Hines Trust. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2022.3.2]
Abstract closeup composition of three mountain flowers floating above a sea of green with puffs of white yarrow and orange Indian paintbrush flower fragments. Floating like a pinwheel in the foreground is a pink mariposa lily with a yellow and ruby center housing the pistils and the stamens. Floating above the mariposa lily are two abstract lavender lilies.

In 1940, O’Keeffe purchased her first home in New Mexico, an adobe house at Ghost Ranch, a dude ranch eighteen miles northwest of Abiquiú. In the 1930s and 1940s, she created many paintings of the surrounding landscapes, from steep red-and-gold cliffs to lavender-and-gray hills. Flowers, which had been prominent in her work from the 1920s, became increasingly rare subjects. These representations of what O’Keeffe described as the “desert-lovely- flowers” that she found along the hillsides are thus rare and distinct from those featured in her earlier body of work. While she does not manipulate or enlarge the flower shapes, she presents them in a dense formation against a monochrome background of a color drawn from the desert landscape. Despite these abstract elements, the overall effect is realistic.
