Georgia O'Keeffe. Skunk Cabbage, 1922. Oil on canvas, 18 x 14 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe), Gift of The Burnett Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2007.1.16]
Vertical canvas with large brown and reddish bean shape in the lower center that has a twisting stem rising out and up. From behind this is a light blue-green leaf-like shape that points upwards, the tip of which touches the top of the canvas. The background is a swirling blending combination of green and yellow on the left, and orange, green, rust and black on the right. In the lower left corner is a grey leaf-like extension on black.
This painting dates to O’Keeffe’s first visit to the artist’s colony at Cos Cob, Connecticut. Skunk cabbage—native to the Northeast—is a perennial herb with thick, heart-shaped foliage that emits a putrid odor when bruised. O’Keeffe depicted the plant on numerous occasions, always from close-up. In this instance we are afforded a “worm’s-eye” view, as if looking up from the ground at the plant’s distinctive silhouette.
