During the 1920s, O’Keeffe often worked in series to explore variations of color, perspective, and framing. Within a series, she moved among varying degrees of abstraction and representation. This composition —exploring line, shape, color, and movement—exemplifies her experimentation with “pure” abstraction in not making obvious reference to a specific object or scene. Reflecting on the sources for her most abstract work, O’Keeffe commented: “Sometimes I know what it comes from. Sometimes I do not . . . Often a picture gets into my head without my having the least idea how it got there.”
