Georgia O'Keeffe. Winter Trees, Abiquiu I, 1950. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Gift of The Burnett Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2007.1.27]
Winter tree overall white on canvas with secondary branches painted in a soft gray.
This painting is one of a series of cottonwoods O’Keeffe depicted during winter in the 1950s. While cottonwoods are often recognized by their full and vibrant foliage in warmer months, the large cottonwood depicted here is leafless; the barren branches emerge from a hazy gray background. O’Keeffe’s continuous return to this subject illustrates an appreciation of this keystone species—even though it is rooted in place, it too experiences changes through each season.
