Georgia O'Keeffe. Mesa and Road East II, 1952. Oil on canvas, 26 x 36 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Gift of The Georgia O’Keeffe Foundation. © Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. [2006.5.235]
A winding road enters the scene from the base of the canvas in the center. It curves to the right before weaving off into the distance to the left. A large, light-colored mesa rises from the right side of the work, its hills sloping down towards the left. Several trees dot the landscape in the foreground, and the sky appears hazy.
Georgia O’Keeffe found enduring inspiration in the view from her bedroom window in Abiquiú, New Mexico, where Highway 84 curved past her home and stretched toward the distant mesas en route to Española and Santa Fe. To fully embrace this vista, she installed two large corner windows in her otherwise simple bedroom. She repeatedly captured the scene from this unique vantage in paintings and photographs, often centering the road as a key motif, as in this oil painting. As O’Keeffe described it, “The road fascinates me with its ups and downs and finally its wide sweep as it speeds toward the wall of my hilltop to go past me.”
