About the Artwork

Georgia O’Keeffe. Horse’s Skull with White Rose, 1931. Oil on canvas, 30 1/16 x 16 1/8 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe), Extended Loan, Private Collection. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
Vertical painting of frontal view of horse's skull with a white rose centered on the forehead. The skull fills most of the canvas floating in a pure black background.

After her first summer in northern New Mexico, Georgia O’Keeffe returned to New York with a barrel full of bones—subjects she set to paint in her studio in the city. This work of 1931 was among the first to combine bleached bones with the vital motif of a single flower, possibly one of the silk flowers also collected by the artist. Among the many bones from O’Keeffe's collection now held by the Museum is the horse’s skull that served as the model for this painting.
