About the Artwork

Georgia O’Keeffe. Autumn Trees - The Maple, 1924. Oil on canvas, 36 x 30 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe), Gift of The Burnett Foundation and Gerald and Kathleen Peters. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [1996.3.1]
Vertical canvas with center stylized grey tree - limbs and trunk spreading out and upwards into reddish, grey and some greenish blended color of arching planes.

This maple tree, from the Stieglitz’s summer home in upstate New York, was a favorite subject for O’Keeffe. Here, she pushed the tree’s form by depicting it as a zoomed-in abstraction. It is difficult to distinguish wood from leaf, positive space from negative space, as the plant fills the entire canvas, spilling over and beyond the edges. Despite the abstraction, O’Keeffe’s palette of mostly grays, blacks, burnt reds, and oranges still evokes the drama of autumnal foliage.
