Georgia O'Keeffe. Trees in Autumn, 1920-1921. Oil on canvas, 25 3/16 x 20 3/16 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe), Gift of The Burnett Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [1997.6.12]
Vibrant canvas of large orange-red tree against purple-white hills and a blue sky. Surrounding the main red tree are areas of yellow color on the left and a green fir tree on the right.
During the early years of their relationship, O’Keeffe would join Alfred Stieglitz, whom she married in 1924, at his family’s home in Lake George, New York, for the summer and autumn. The house would often be filled with family and friends—sometimes too full for O’Keeffe’s liking. To get away, she would spend time painting in a small outbuilding she called the “shanty.” Her “shanty” paintings include this exploration of the vibrant autumn maples for which the Adirondacks region is famous.
