Georgia O’Keeffe. Part of the Cliff, 1946. Oil on canvas, 36 x 20 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Gift of The Georgia O’Keeffe Foundation. © Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. [2006.5.202]
Sheer cliffs fill the vast majority of this work. The color of the cliffs lightens slightly at the upper-most layer of rock. Blue sky peeks through a small crevice near the top of the formation.
The cliffside depicted in this painting by Georgia O’Keeffe represents a partial view from her Ghost Ranch studio. To give herself a better view of this spectacular panorama, she had a plate glass window installed in the studio wall. O’Keeffe took long walks at the foot of these cliffs, often with her dogs.
