Georgia O'Keeffe. Untitled (Banyan Tree), 1934. Charcoal on paper, 21 3/4 x 15 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Gift of The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2006.5.143]
Vertical graphite drawing of multi-limbed banyan tree with leaf detail on left side and hinted on right side and root detail on lower portion both sides.
O’Keeffe traveled to Bermuda, once in 1933 and again in 1934, as she recovered from depression and anxiety. Though she was producing little art during this time, she found solace in the island’s flora, and capturing the local plant life helped restore her creative energy. This drawing, created during her second trip to Bermuda, is one of eight sketches she produced on the island that depict the limbs of banyan trees.
