About the Artwork

Georgia O'Keeffe. Drawing, 1915-1916. Charcoal on paper, 24 3/4 x 18 1/2 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe), Gift of The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [2006.5.19]
A large, dark-colored blanket hangs across much of the upper portion of the image, with soft folds flowing off to the right. A second blanket comprised of alternating black and white horizontal stripes of various sizes descends from the upper-left corner across much of the lower portion of the drawing. It lies in heavier folds than the darker blanket on its right. A small patch of dark color is exposed in the lower-left portion of the drawing, forming a contrast to the striped blanket that it borders.

Georgia O’Keeffe began experimenting with abstraction in 1915, at a time when she had grown disillusioned with painting. Working freely with charcoal on paper, she made drawings with no recognizable subject matter—drawings that caught the attention of New York art dealer Alfred Stieglitz when he first saw these works. Though the folded forms of this composition may recall the folds of a blanket, in 1974 O’Keeffe wrote: “This is a drawing of something I never saw except in the drawing. When one begins to wander around in one’s own thoughts and half-thoughts what one sees is often surprising.”
