Georgia O’Keeffe. Bella Donna, 1939. Oil on canvas, 36 1/4 x 30 1/8 inches. Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe), Extended loan, private collection. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [L.1997.3.3]
Two large swirling white flowers, one atop the other. The interior of the bottom flower is visible, yet the top flower is tilted upward hiding it's center. The two flowers fill the majority of the canvas, with a sliver of blue - perhaps an ocean horizon line along the top.
O’Keeffe painted this plant, a deadly nightshade known as bella donna, while she was in Hawaii. Due to its white, trumpet-shaped flowers, bella donna looks similar to its cousin the jimson weed, a plant O’Keeffe had painted in New Mexico.
O’Keeffe’s trip to Hawaii was sponsored by the Dole Pineapple Company, which had commissioned the artist to paint a pineapple plant for use as an advertisement. This three-month trip proved immensely inspiring for O’Keeffe, and she returned home with numerous sketches, photographs, and paintings, including this one. None of these paintings, however, was of a pineapple. When O'Keeffe finally painted the requested pineapple, it was from a plant the company sent to her in New York following her return from Hawaii.
