Georgia O'Keeffe. Pelvis Series, Red with Yellow, 1945. Oil on canvas, 36 x 48 in (91.4 x 121.9 cm). Extended Loan, Private Collection. Gift of The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. [L.1997.3.4]
Large horizontal canvas of magnified pelvic bone in reddish orange. Emphasis is on the oval hole in the pelvis, the empty space of which fills the majority of the canvas in yellow.
In the 1940s, O’Keeffe began depicting the sky as seen through the holes of pelvic bones she had found while walking in the desert. As she later recalled: “When I started painting the pelvis bones I was most interested in . . . holding them up in the sun against the sky as one is apt to do when one seems to have more sky than earth in one’s world.” Although she found them “most wonderful against the blue,” O’Keeffe experimented with other colors, like this version in which the bone is depicted a fiery red and the sky a yellowy-orange. Painted in 1945—the year the first nuclear test was conducted in central New Mexico—the work illustrates her belief that the sky would always be there, even “after all man’s destruction is finished.”
